HAROLDsCROSSlive is a live urban design project, conceived and realised by the students and staff of Fourth Year Architecture in the Dublin School of Architecture at DIT.  Working closely with the local community, it is our vision for Harolds Cross, what it could be now and in the future as an unique urban village and a place to ‘live’ in the heart of the city of Dublin.

Our intention for the backlands of Priory Square was to densify the unused land around Harold’s Cross. These “wastelands” could be given uses that not only benefits the community but also bring it together. Addressing Point 1 Social Connections: By bringing the two schools on Clareville Road we hope together into one building we hope to straighten the relationship between the schools and the area around them. Addressing Point 3 Cultural Reactivation: By densifying the suburban areas of Harold’s Cross and giving these “wastelands” a function. Addressing Point 5 Ecological Growth: By taking the untamed growth of the exiting backlands and laying out gardens we hope to not only increase the usable green space of Harold’s Cross but also create a place to grow local produce.

The Priory Square backlands schemes sets out to densify the urban grain of disused spaces in Harold’s Cross. The scheme contains 3 different types of housing to facilitating to 3 different demographics, these include students, artists and the elderly. Together we identified the problems of the mono-type of the suburban housing in Harold’s Cross and came to 3 different solutions and applied them to the 3 sites. The scheme also rejuvenates the local primary schools by galvanizing the relationship between the existing schools and the surrounding housing.

This project focused on opening up this section of private housing back into its context and providing routes through to other linking spaces through urban parks. Along with this the play in vertical scale was introduced to help the transition from urban into the city scale with a tower on the corner of the site creating a presence and nodal point stating the entrance into Harold’s Cross.

MOUNT TALLANT PLAZA by Anders O’Donoghue

The concept was to create a ‘gateway building’ to Harold’s Cross which would also be a focal point and anchor to the public plaza situated on its south side. The building changes your perception of Harold’s Cross as it is seen from many points around the greater area. I tried to do a relatively simple structure that reflects the Georgian plot module and an elevation system of interlocking proportions. The almost double height ground floor space is inhabited by the south facing restaurant, with outdoor seating that spills into the plaza, and a small supermarket that services the local community. The separated core from the main floor space creates two slender volumes interacting with each other, and gives a separate identity to the office space. The first to fifth floor would be allocated for small to medium sized start-up businesses looking to get a foothold in the Dublin market, creating more jobs for the Harold’s Cross community.


Our Lady’s Hospice Day Care Centre by Jessica Laffan

The main intention is to increase permeability throughout the hospice using nature; to turn the Hospice into a garden. This is to allow the hospice to function more effectively for its residents and also to encourage interaction between the residents of the hospice and the community in Harold’s Cross. A tree lined avenue leads from the main entrance through the Public Square and wraps around the Community Based Day Care Centre and leads either to the Education Centre or to the Greenmount Industrial Estate Entrance. The new entrance is created from Greenmount Industrial Estate to confine vehicular traffic to the industrial edge of the Hospice. The Community Based Day Care Centre is located on this edge to enhance it’s connection with Harold’s Cross and to expose an essential part of the hospice to the public, making it more accessible and creating a threshold. The Wellness Centre is located deeper in the existing building.The Main Reception is accessed from the apple orchard in the Public Square and provides access to the Wellness Centre and cinema. The apple orchard also creates an enjoyable walk linking to the pedestrianised Hospice Heart and leading to the Restaurant which is also open to the Harold’s Cross Community. Lavender gardens around the Wellness Centre incorporate pedestrianised walkways which lead to the garden to the rear of the Hospice. The carpark around the Education Centre contains bays which are defined by planters and create multiple points of access and pleasant walkways through the lavender garden.

As a group, we designed a series of spaces that would add a quality to the site. It would become a gift to Harold’s Cross and the people who occupy it. Our concept was simple in thought, we will transform the Hospice into a garden. We will return the value of the space and present the potential of the site back to the people.
